Our body recharges each time we sleep. On Mars, the day is 39 minutes and 35 seconds longer. Although that may not seem like a drastic difference, it will certainly mess up the astronauts’ circadian rhythms. They will need to be fully rested to properly function the next day and to make discoveries. Most of their research will be noted on an electronic device. As convenient as they are, they emit blue light, which inhibits the body’s production of melatonin. Sources of blue light include the sun, digital screens, electronic devices, and fluorescent and LED lighting. Prolonged exposure to blue light may cause retinal damage and contribute to age-related macular degeneration, which can lead to loss of vision. I made a design for glasses that block blue light that will help astronauts get their circadian rhythm back on track and prevent loss of vision. Amber tinted glasses help eliminate eye strain while you are on an electronic device. They block the harmful blue lights effectively.
