Astronauts are prone to dental carries. Astronauts are subject to high levels of radiation, causing a greater exposure to reactive oxygen species. Additionally, astronauts have lowered immunity in space, which leads oral microbiota to flourish and cause tooth decay in combination with free radical exposure. Currently, astronauts are only taught preventative dental care, however if a problem such as a cavity arises, there are few materials and tools to fix it. This device is a dental drill that will aid astronauts if they have a cavity. They can simply drill a small hole where the cavity is and insert a temporary or permanent filling (whichever is available).
