The Overfishing Problem In Virginia Virginia is littered with many bodies of water that harbor all kinds of aquatic life. Thanks to the abounding lakes, rivers, and ponds it isn’t hard to find a place to drop your line. For the fishing industry, Virginia is a gold mine but for the fish it’s a different story. Virginia is right along the east coast and touches the bottom part of the largest estuary in the western hemisphere, the Chesapeake Bay. Fishermen from the Hampton Roads area flock to the Chesapeake Bay to make their livelihood fishing. The Chesapeake Bay is famous for its blue crab and oysters. With the increasing demand for these delicacies the fishermen increasingly harvest more and more blue crabs and oysters from the Chesapeake Bay. This has gone on for years and the effects are devastating on the environment. There is only one way to fix this problem. We need to regulate the level of fishing that goes on in the Chesapeake Bay. The aquatic life in the Bay continues to decline because of pollution and overfishing. Businesses need to be more conscious of how their activities affect the environment.
