Global warming is a problem for today's generation and future generations. In Virginia, sea level rise is a problem because it is making flooding worse and more often. The sea level in the next year will more than likely rise and by 2050 predictions believe that the sea will claim 600 sq miles, “today, Virginia has 164,000 people at risk of coastal flooding. By 2050, an additional 137,000 people are projected to be at risk due to sea level rise”, said States At Risk. The rising sea level will affect Suffolk's more coastal regions in all aspects of life from farming, housing, business, and schools, it could affect the tourist area of Virginia beach. It could displace thousands of people. Ways to prevent this include building homes on a higher level and moving further away from the coast or building flood barriers. Newer homes should be built on a high level using stilts or building houses away from water and building retention ponds to help with runoff during heavy rain. To take action you could help build flood barriers such as levees, dikes, and seawalls.
