The Tambaqui lives primarily in the central amazon river. They live to 40-65 years. Tambaqui consume varieties of fruits and seeds. They also have a unique ability, they have acid resistance, they can survive in 4.0-8.0 pH when the average pH of the central amazon river is 6.0. When there is low oxygen, they obtain oxygen from the air. They do this using a highly vascularized swim bladder and their gills. In the future, the tambaqui’s ability to resist acid has increased so they can resist an acidity up to 3 on the pH scale. These fish have received a lighter color of their scales as the sun has burnt through the ozone layer a little more. The closer the scales are to white, the more sun they reflect. They have decreased in length by 6” and decreased 10 pounds, this is because the food has decreased due to deforestation.
