The words “Freedom is not free” remind us that veterans and active duty service members have made sacrifices to protect us and the freedom we believe in. I first discovered these pointedly true words when I visited my local Korean War Veterans Memorial in Overland Park, Kansas. The memorial honors all of our soldiers who fought in the war, including those from my town.
My experience visiting this memorial inspired me to focus the design around the powerful message “Freedom is not free.” I incorporated six stars (including the base), to honor the fact that there are six branches of the armed forces. The eagle on the design represents our country, and the freedom that so many veterans have made sacrifices to protect.
