Increased storm surge is a negative result of climate change in South Carolina. Storm surge can cause floods, putting coastal infrastructure in danger of destruction. Dunes create a barrier between the ocean and upland development, protecting infrastructure against storm surge. However, most dunes are destroyed by people walking on them and using them as an entrance to the beach or simply broken down over time because of a lack of durability. My proposal to increase dune longevity is to promote people to donate their Christmas trees after the holiday season. Christmas trees would be placed close against the base and naturally covered over time with sand. Some dunes have cement embedded underneath acting as a core to support the dune. Reusing trees is more environmentally friendly than using cement, since they are a natural resource, and it’s a beneficial way to repurpose them, rather than throwing them away after the holidays. Adding signs, informing people not to walk or play on the dunes will also help reduce destruction. Since I spend most of my summers at my family’s beach house, I often see children playing on dunes and destroying them because people aren't aware of how dunes serve coastal communities.
