My climate challenge action project works to amend the produce waste in my school. I come from a large school with almost 2,000 students that goes through thousands of pieces of fruit every week with the meals served there. Students must take fruit with every meal, however, a large portion of that fruit ends up in the trash and is wasted. To combat this issue a “share bin” would be put into the cafeteria. This bin allows for produce to be left somewhere separate from the garbage to be taken by other students who want it. Then a portion of the fruit will be composted at our school. We have a school garden and with the added nutrients from the produce, new plants can be grown and our school’s environment will prosper as our state’s native flowers grow in. Finally, we plan to donate the last of the wasted produce to local farms. We have so much waste that it cannot possibly all be eaten or composted on-site, however, our local farms can take our produce and compost it themselves or use it as animal feed. With support from our school’s environmental club, produce waste can be remedied.
