Because climate change can cause flooding in coastal areas of the United States which can lead to loss of property, more elevated structures should be constructed in coastal parts of the country. These elevated structures can vary in design, but they should all ensure that the main structure of buildings is raised above ground level. Doing so will enable flooding to pass under the main structures and limit damage to property. One example of this is building houses on poles or stilts. The houses will be 10-20 feet above the ground, with empty space below them that can be used as a storage or recreational area. If the coastal area floods, then the water will pass under the house, thereby ensuring the protection of the house itself. This technique might prove challenging for larger structures such as schools or offices, and a way to counter this is to expand those structures horizontally rather than vertically so that it is easier to raise them on stilts or elevate them through other means.
