As global warming continues to melt glaciers and ice sheets, causing sea levels to rise, flooding becomes more and more of a risk to cities, especially in coastal areas. Flooding could cause damage to homes and property and prevent transportation if it is not considered in cities. There are many ways to combat and prevent flooding, but it can be expensive to change a city’s infrastructure. A simple and inexpensive way to combat flooding is to implement the use of rain gardens throughout a city. A rain garden is a round depression in the ground filled and surrounded by water-tolerant plants and vegetation. They reduce the effects of flooding by absorbing water from precipitation and runoff. While reducing the effects of flooding, rain gardens can also reduce pollutants in the water and improve water quality. While cities can help contribute by using these gardens around the cities, anyone can plant their own rain gardens on their own property to help out. Increasing the use of rain gardens can prove to be an inexpensive way to combat floods while enhancing the look of the landscape.
