A simple and inexpensive way to combat flooding is to implement the use of rain gardens throughout a city. A rain garden is a round depression in the ground filled and surrounded by water-tolerant plants and vegetation. They reduce the effects of flooding by absorbing water from precipitation and runoff. While reducing the effects of flooding, rain gardens can also reduce pollutants in the water and improve water quality. While cities can help contribute by using these gardens around the cities, anyone can plant their own rain gardens on their own property to help out. Increasing the use of rain gardens can prove to be an inexpensive way to combat floods while enhancing the look of the landscape.
