One of the main climate-related issues in coastal areas is tidal flooding. During the hurricane season, coastal towns are hit hard, and millions of dollars of damage are done to houses, schools, and businesses. This is detrimental not only to residents of the area but the many tourist towns that rely on local businesses to survive. An easy way to get the community involved and decrease tidal flooding is by employing high schools to volunteer and plant trees and shrubs around the coastline. Shrubs and trees have the ability to prevent the erosion of coastal banks, preventing tides from being able to ravage property beyond the shore. By getting high school students involved, you can not only work to prevent tidal flooding on a large scale, but also teach students about tidal flooding and the importance of preventing. Student’s will also gain hands-on experience, critical thinking, and leadership skills that will benefit them no matter what path they choose to take post graduation.
