This proposal, titled “Methods for Reducing Sargassum on the Coasts of Puerto Rico” works with collecting sargassum, which is a macroalgae, to create compost and later using it to help Puerto Rico’s agriculture or for personal use. The project is of great importance because the high abundance of sargassum on the coasts of Puerto Rico is becoming an evident problem due to all the negative effects that it causes on the economy, marine life, and population. For example, it has already been registered that more than 72 marine species have been affected by this macroalgae. In addition, another example of this is that sargassum affects biodiversity when it decomposes because it emits toxic gasses and consumes a lot of oxygen. That is why by collecting the sargassum and making it compost, Puerto Rico’s environment will not only see a great difference in reducing erosion and helping marine wildlife but also in helping its agriculture.
