Sargassum is a seaweed that grows on its own without being attached to any surface. Puerto Rico, like the rest of the Caribbean, has a problem with huge amounts of sargassum in their coastal beaches. The citizens can’t enjoy their own beaches because of this phenomenon. The Barbados’ Minister of the Environment and National Beautification, Adrian Forde said “That has been our challenge over the last couple of years with an abnormal influx of Sargassum seaweed due to the vagaries of climate change,”. The increase of greenhouse gasses is affecting the amount of sargassum that is arriving at coastal beaches. My proposal consists of feeding cattle animals this seaweed, which is going to help the environment by reducing the amount of methane they produce in digestion. According to SIAP referring to sargassum “It is used as food for livestock”, this process is approved by Servicio de información agroalimentaria y pesquera. This seaweed is going to be introduced in 2% of cows diets to reduce the amount of methane they produce. This project will also benefit the economy of the citizens since it will give job opportunities to those in need in Vieques, Culebra and coastal towns in Puerto Rico
