Extreme heat continues to cause more heat-related illnesses and can be especially dangerous for those with issues such as heart conditions and respiratory diseases. Since extreme heat is expected to continue to worsen, it is important to find ways to prevent people from overheating, reducing hospital admissions and deaths due to extreme heat. A cooling backpack such as Icy Pak would provide a way for people to avoid quickly overheating on hot days. The backpack would include two fans on each side of the bag connected to a battery. The battery would be charged by a solar panel located on the front of the bag. To turn the fans on or off, there is a button on the bag's left strap to press. The air from the fans blows upward through the back of the bag, where EVA pockets holding ice packs would be located, making the air cooler. The air would then be released through moisture wicking mesh located on the top and back of the bag to cool down a person’s back and neck. Although similar designs exist, Icy Pak is the only design to include solar-powered fans with ice packs to cool down the person wearing it.
