Ohio has been facing more and more catastrophic flooding in past years due to climate change. The increasingly common flooding of rivers has caused an onslaught of flash flooding, killing civilians and severely damaging vital infrastructure in its wake. Flooding is a devastating worldwide issue, in which flooding had even been the costliest global peril in 2021. An action that the greater Ohio community should take to prevent further loss of life is building large underground flood water diversion facilities. These underground facilities would consist of giant underground caverns and tunnels with tall cement columns. When the water level rises in a river, the excess water would flow through tunnels and into the large underground caverns, immediately preventing river flooding. Additionally, these giant underground facilities could transport excess water from a river into bigger rivers or bodies of water that could take in the excess water. By targeting the source of the flash flooding, the flooding of rivers, future disasters will be directly prevented. While improved evacuation plans and other changes could work to alleviate the effects of flash flooding, significant action to directly prevent this dire issue is required to most effectively stop the loss of lives.
