The changing climate California is reducing the rainfall, shrinking the snowpack that feeds our rivers, and is predicted to reduce the flow in essential water basins. This reduction of water strains the agriculture business, poses health problems and risk with less availability of water. Wave powered desalination, placed near the coast, can help solve this problem. Using paddles, it can transform wave energy into electrical energy. This energy is then used to power the desalination plant, which uses reverse osmosis to filter ocean water into freshwater. The brine, and any other particles filtered from the ocean water, is then disposed through a brine diffuser which will distribute the brine over a large area to minimize environmental damage. The wave-powered desalination is sustainable as it relies on renewable energy and is cost-effective in the long term since wave energy is free. This new way to acquire water in Southern California can help people acquire more water and help the community.
