Combating Climate Change - Protecting My Community The normal climate in my community is changing and threatens to destroy parks, beaches, and other wilderness areas. One of the problems associated with climate change that is greatly impacting Long Island shores is sea level rise. Rising sea levels have tremendously impacted our communities by eroding shorelines, increasing coastal flooding, and inundating low-level wetlands and dry land. My proposed solution to fight sea level rise on Long Island, specifically in my community, is to create new natural barriers and improve existing ones. We can do this by adding more sand to beaches, creating artificial reefs, protecting existing wetlands, and restoring lost wetlands. These programs can be enacted through community initiatives, either through the town or the county, to get volunteers to improve the beaches and create the wetlands. Using these initiatives, we can prevent sea level rise from destroying the communities we call home.
