Manufacturers want their food to taste and look the best. To accomplish this we see many brands and manufacturers using chemicals to enhance flavor, color, texture, and preservation. Some of the more common chemicals we see on the ingredient lists are monosodium glutamate and sodium nitrite. Monosodium glutamate is a flavor enhancer added to many restaurant meals, canned goods, and even the meat you find at the deli. Sodium nitrate is added to meats to preserve them so they keep their bright red color. With a little research I found that sodium nitrate is an oxidizer which makes it harder for oxygen to travel through the blood once ingested. Monosodium glutamate is still a greatly debated ingredient. Wouldn't you want the safety of your food to be guaranteed? I believe we should replace all the chemicals with natural ingredients which would give the same if not better benefits. So where do we get all of these ingredients? I believe we should increase the number of greenhouses and farms with the wide amount of farming area we have in America. This would not only give us the ingredients needed to make healthier products but will also open up new jobs.
