Leafy Spurge is toxic to livestock such as cattle, sheep, and equine. It also causes severe irritation in humans and can cause blindness if contact with the eyes occurs. Wyoming is strongly a state built on livestock thriving. We provide meat, dairy, and poultry products to the other states. With Leafy Spurge on the rise, the neutralization of threats to our livestock and their feeding grounds are imperative. By introducing Aphthona (Leafy spurge) beetles into the infected areas, we could potentially eradicate the leafy spurge from those areas. The beetles will eat the leafy spurge at any stage, so they can work them down the whole lifespan of the invasive species. Taking out the leafy spurge with the aphthona beetles is a safer alternative to herbicides and weed killers such as Picloram with 2,4-D, which has proven to be toxic to pets and families alike. With the leafy spurge gone, due to the beetles, one of the many threats our livestock here in Wyoming face have been neutralized.
