The Yellow Star Thistle is an invasive species that spreads really quickly and chokes out native plants. The seeds spread via wind, water, and on clothes or fur. This species is highly adaptable to environmental variation and grows quickly. Temperatures in Wyoming range widely from -40 F to 110 F throughout the year. If this plant continues to spread, biodiversity will decrease in Wyoming and native plants eaten by our native ungulates (pronghorn, deer, elk, Big Horn sheep) will disappear and affect the herbivore population. If we place goats onto land where the Yellow Star-thistle is taking over, they will get rid of the plants for us. Goats are the only animal that will eat the plant even with its spikes. With the Yellow Star- Thistle being fast growing, it would be hard to get rid of them all before the spikes grew on.Therefore goats would be the best solution, because they will eat the plant at any stage of life. This solution not only provides food for the goats, but saves the land that was once invaded by this species.
