Areas that are affected from major weather events often suffer from communication issues, leaving communities and families separated during a dangerous time. Due to this, property damage increases, casualties rise, and families are devastated by the major weather event. In my community, hurricanes are a frequent occurrence, happening every year during hurricane season. Cell phone towers and service can often be taken out during these events, leaving people unaware about the situation, leading to an uncoordinated community that suffers more as a whole. A solution to this communication issue would be using satellites for cell phone service, through a company like Starlink. This would allow people to communicate with each other even if the cell phone towers are gone. They wouldn’t have to risk going outside during these dangerous weather conditions, but they would be able relay information to their family and friends, leaving everyone in a safer position. Services like Starlink can replace traditional phone plans, and act as a safer option during disaster events.
