The Louisiana climate comes with lots of heat. Overheating in Louisiana is very common and can lead to extreme health issues. The Louisiana Department of Health states that there are, on average, 2,600 heat-related ED visits and 260 hospitalizations due to heat each year, with the majority being athletes and outdoor workers. An easy way to avoid overheating is to make sure to drink lots of water and stay hydrated; the warmer it is outside, the more water you should be drinking. For sports teams, coaches tend to push the players to keep practicing no matter the temperature that day; however, this is extremely dangerous and is a very easy way to overheat. To avoid overheating on the sports field, coaches should allow their team regular breaks, schedule event times during the coolest part of the day, listen to their players when they’re voicing that they can’t practice any longer, and cancel any event that’ll have a heat index over 103 degrees Fahrenheit. As excessive heat is a huge problem in Louisiana, all Louisiana residents should become aware of the signs of heat exhaustion and a heat stroke and know what to do in the event of one happening.
