Louisiana is known as the Bayou state, due to its high amount of water and precipitation. In the past year, drought has led to a lack of rain which has negatively impacted The Mississippi River. The Mississippi River provides a habitat to native species while also providing water to much of southeastern Louisiana. This drought has led to freshwater receding up the river, which allowed for saltwater from the Gulf of Mexico to take its place. This recession led to the infection of the water supply in the area along the Gulf. This saltwater negatively affects native plants and other freshwater species. Louisiana has already put through efforts, such as sand wedges, to stop the salt water from flowing up the Mississippi. The salt wedges did not work, however, as there was no fresh water in the first place. Along with the sand wedges, another fix was a thin screen that filters out salt from the river. As saltwater is much denser than freshwater, the filter would have to be near the bottom of the river to prevent problems with native species and boats.
