Seattle's picturesque blend of stunning forests and awe-inspiring ocean with a perfect contrast to its tech savvy downtown metropolis is overshadowed by the label of the 'rainy corner of the northwest.’ But this stereotype is hard to argue with, especially when climate change comes into play with rising temperatures trapping more moisture in the air, causing increased rainfall in our coastal region. Though most people seem merely inconvenienced by the constant downpour, those in marginalized communities with less resources face challenging times. Flooding disproportionately affects those in coastal cities with inadequate infrastructure. To address this, a proposed action would be to have government led development with more sustainable and efficient systems using increasingly efficient pervious asphalt, drainage structures, and grid pavers. These not only will have a positive impact on Seattle, but any city nationwide facing similar challenges. With the goal of mitigating climate-related hazards and creating forward thinking infrastructure, we can create a safer and more sustainable environment. Though we can’t shed our umbrellas and rid ourselves of our windbreakers yet, this proposal is a call of duty to stop people from disregarding the dreary weather and labeling it as bad luck. It is time to take action.
