The rising sea level due to climate change will cause flooding in some parts of San Mateo County and other San Francisco Bay Area counties. Since we are right by the ocean, rising sea levels could negatively impact us, especially in areas such as Half Moon Bay. Nature-based solutions would be the most effective at protecting from flooding. Although updating building design standards is a great idea and might be immediately effective in the short term, as the sea level rises and worsens rapidly, those design standards must be constantly updated. We must prioritize natural solutions. Not only will restoring our wetlands help prevent flooding, but it will also help the ecosystem of the SF Bay Area by providing habitats for species that rely on wetlands. Wetlands are also crucial in recycling nutrients. Updating building design standards could require placing buildings in different locations, which could encroach on some species’ habitats.
