As our changing climate results in more powerful rainstorms, the ever-present issue of flooding presents itself in communities across the planet. Flooding causes widespread disruption to everyone’s daily lives. For instance, in my community, flooding from rain results in traffic jams and car accidents, delayed trains and buses, and disrupted flights and travel plans. It also results in property damage, such as when flooding harms homes and cars, and public infrastructure destruction when rain and flooding result in things such as damaged roads. To help fix this issue, I propose a solution of constructing more levees and better storm drain systems. Storm drains can be updated to get clogged less frequently. Additionally, replacing paved surfaces such as parking lots and sidewalks with porous concrete that absorbs rainwater can reduce the scale of flooding.
