My proposed action plan is to promote carpooling within my community of San Carlos. One significant climate problem within our community is the heavy reliance on personal vehicles for transportation. This issue has several causes: (1) The municipal design of the city necessitates personal vehicles in order to commute to and from work, as the city is separated into residential and business areas. This discourages using more sustainable transportation like biking, walking, or public transit. (2) The public transit system in San Carlos is often unclean (especially the trains), which further discourages its use as opposed to public transit. (3) Culturally, cars are seen as a status symbol. The freedom that a personal vehicle offers is seen as desirable by many, and as such very few people tend to use public transit. How can we make the community more sustainable, accounting for these reasons? We can promote carpooling in order to increase the efficiency of transport (most people drive alone, making it very inefficient in terms of transportation). Promoting carpooling would also be more likely to make a change, as cars are seen as desirable by many. It would also be cheaper than overhauling public transport or redesigning the city.
