Due to climate change, California’s temperate climate and biodiversity (the greatest in the country) are becoming deeply threatened. One of the biggest effects of climate change in California is increased temperatures which lead to lung damage, childhood asthma, heart disease, dehydration, and worse, and cause electricity usage to spike. To avoid this continuing, I propose creating energy education programs and providing better ways to escape the heat. For the first, we need a curriculum for all citizens which informs them about how their increased energy usage can be a problem, and how they can manage it better. As this is not really their own fault, we should then lead them to more accessible (easier to reach) cooling centers with larger capacities; and bolster the temperature regulation of communal spaces like malls, schools, grocery stores, libraries, and workplaces, where many people go to cool down in the absence of designated cooling centers. By creating better ways to cool down and encouraging people to make use of them, we can keep people cool and safe while making sure they don’t have to pay excessive amounts on individual spaces.
