LANDSLIDES are a pressing issue facing communities around the United States. These completely preventable natural disasters claim an average of anywhere from 25 to 50 lives annually in all 50 states. Landslides are caused by heavy rain, earthquakes, and other natural occurrences that disturb or otherwise destabilize landslide-prone slopes. Furthermore, most slopes that do turn into landslides move up to several inches every year before the slide occurs. Using satellite imagery and artificial intelligence filtering programs, scientists can determine which slopes are prone to landslides and take preventive measures to reinforce these areas to protect natural habitat, property, and human life.
