As the Ice caps continue to melt, groundwater will rise and flood communities. No matter where you are, you are at risk of flooding because, unlike seawater, you do not need to be on the coast to get flooded. The melting ice caps will cause seawater to rise, which will cause the groundwater to rise and flood because both water sources connect through a series of streams and underground rivers. My idea is to spread awareness and install plants that absorb water and prevent flooding in high-risk communities. Plants such as red maples absorb excess amounts of water around them and decrease the chance of flooding, whether the water is from above or below. By sharing this knowledge in communities, many would be less at risk of groundwater flooding. These plants would absorb the water in the ground before it can flood the land above. Every year, millions of dollars in property damage occur because of flash flooding. With these plants, this amount can be reduced and help save homes.
