Since 1996, there has been a 320% increase in wildfires in California. The biggest reason for this increase is climate change, which is caused by greenhouse gases being released into the atmosphere. The number one contributor of greenhouse gas emissions is the transportation sector. Cars and trucks release them through the burning of gasoline and diesel fuels. Currently, only 13% of people use public transportation on a regular basis. I propose taking 3 steps to increase the use of public transportation to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The first is to give free passes to students for their commute to school. The second is to work on modernizing mobile apps to make them more convenient, accessible, and easy to use. An ability to see various transportation schedules and options would make people much more likely to use it. The third is improved cleaning and maintenance. There is often a stigma around public transportation being dirty and unsafe. The increased revenue as a result from the first two steps can be used to increase the budget for cleaning and security.
