In New Jersey, sea levels are rising rapidly and quicker than in most coastal areas. The sea is predicted to rise by 18 inches to 4 feet in the coming century, sinking many wetlands, which are crucial to subdue flooding. Along the coastline, beaches will begin to erode, which may also allow for more floods and devastation in coastal communities. In order to combat sea level rise, a program will be created with an app for residents to track their recycling with. With this app, they will be reminded periodically to bring recyclable materials, especially glass, to their local recycling centers, allowing for less emissions and material that can be repurposed to solve coastal issues. The glass will be transformed into sand to increase the height of beaches, acting against coastal erosion, and other materials will become barriers for the back of beaches to block flooding. These barriers will be protected to prevent microplastics from entering the ocean as well. Additionally, more wetland systems will be created near coastal areas to absorb flood water before it can devastate communities. This program is crucial to solving New Jersey’s climate issues, allowing residents to contribute to the bettering of their communities.
