California has a Mediterranean-type climate with wet winters and dry summers. Recently, we have been getting a lot of rain because of atmospheric rivers. Excessive amounts of rain paired with the loose rocks and soil that make up California’s terrain is the perfect recipe for mudslides. Mudslides are increasing in California, and the government has tried finding mudslide hotspots since the Montecito mudslides. Mudslides are caused by a fast accumulation of water in the rocks and soil. When the water can’t be held anymore, it surges out along with the rocks and soil. To protect civilians who live in areas vulnerable to mudslides, we could insert a device, the Mudslide Tracker, into the soil that detects the amount of water in the soil in relation to the speed of the water accumulation. When the water reaches an alarming level in a short period of time, the device would send out an alert to the civilians in the area and the local government and fire station. This would allow civilians to escape before a mudslide happens and protect them from getting injured due to mudslides.
