Flooding in California has severe impacts on peoples’ homes and communities. Within 30 years, some of California’s coastal cities will be completely flooded. 12 atmospheric rivers hit California in March 2023. While these provide fresh water, back-to-back occurrences cause extreme rainfall, leading to floods. Floods can potentially uproot millions of people. Scientists have suggested solutions like permeable asphalts, rain gardens, and floodplains to prevent flooding. What if all three were combined? The “Aqua Alcove” will be a mixture of permeable asphalts, rain gardens, and floodplains. It will be located near the coast and next to rivers like the San Joaquin River which is the floodplain aspect. The floodplains will consist of alternating squares of rain gardens and permeable asphalt. Water will be able to infiltrate the ground and later into aquifers, another bonus. The permeable asphalt will consist of layers of gravel and sand, the most permeable sediments. The rain gardens will have native Californian plants that can withstand rain like Beach Aster and Common Yarrow. Since flood damage is costing California billions of dollars, the Aqua Alcove will be a smart and productive investment.
