Drought affects the community in multiple ways. Water scarcity can lead to ecosystem damage, soil degradation, and decreased drinking water and agricultural water supply. My proposed climate action plan is RainyRetainy, a community-wide rainwater harvesting system. In residential systems and public buildings, we can encourage and implement the installation of rainwater harvesting systems such as gutters, downspouts, and storage tanks. This collected water can be recycled for multiple purposes, including gardening, toilet flushing, and even drinking. This solution not only meets the water needs of our community, but can also serve as educational demonstrations and reduce runoff. Rainwater harvesting systems will also be beneficial for community engagement, by providing opportunities for communities to regularly monitor rainfall, better understand water sources and consumption patterns, and get involved in supporting the community’s water conservation efforts.
