Currently, the habitat of the piranha is shallow murky water, with stones on the bottom of the river. The Amazon River is a freshwater river, hundreds of miles long in South America. After climate change, the water levels became much higher. The river turned into saltwater due to rising sea levels flooding into the river. The piranha before climate change was large and fatty, due to it being a freshwater fish. The piranha has small scales. Although not clearly pictured, the gills had to change in order to adapt to the saltwater environment. The piranha became smaller because it lost lipids in the body. This is because saltwater fish are smaller and have less lipids compared to freshwater fish.
