Ocelots currently live in the Amazon rainforest. They have dark fur with black markings for camouflage, retractable claws for climbing and other rainforest adaptations. However, as deforestation and climate change continue, their habitat will shrink and ocelots will have to adapt. Many of these adaptations include the coat of the ocelot. In the increasing heat and light that was previously blocked by the trees, the current ocelot cannot survive. Instead, lighter fur reflects light and thicker fur insulates the ocelot, preventing heat from penetrating. The ocelot will also have larger eyes that allow light to be better absorbed in the nighttime hours, where the temperature is safe enough for the ocelot. It will have thick eyelids preventing sand, dirt and debris storms from injuring their eyes, and protective markings that reflect sunlight from the eyes of the ocelot. These adaptations could likely aid an ocelot in the changing climate.
