Sloths live in the tropical rainforests of northern South America and Central America. They live mostly in trees and spend most of their lives hanging upside down. Sloths eat, sleep, mate, and even have babies while hanging upside down! Presently, they are herbivores, their diet consisting mostly of leaves but sometimes fruits and other plants. In a few thousand years, Sloths will change both their physical and behavioral adaptations. This is because global warming and deforestation have turned their rainforest into a savanna. With few trees left, the sloth has become a creature that walks on the ground. Another effect of having few trees is that the sloth has turned into an omnivore, eating small creatures but also eating leaves when it can find them. The sloth has also started to live in underground burrows so it can keep cool in the hot climate of the savanna it calls home.
