Axolotls live in Mexico City’s Lake Xochimilco. The word axolotl means “water dog” which comes from the Aztecs. Their mythological connection is to Xolotl, the god of fire, lighting, and death. Axolotls have been around for 10,000 years. They measure 6 to 18 inches in length and weigh about the size of a can of soup. Axolotls can be pink, brown, or green. They have three gills on each side of their head that look like feathers. Axolotls eat worms, insects, and small fish. In addition, they have superpowers to blend in with their environment and regenerate body organs and lost limbs. Also, axolotls are said to be 1,000 times more resistant to cancer than mammals. I think in 1,000 years the lake will dry up due to habitat decline and water pollution. This will cause axolotls to live on land or become endangered within another 1,000 years or more.
