Squirrel monkeys live in the rainforests of South America. They live in trees and love to eat guava. Squirrel monkeys are highly intelligent and live in family groups of around 7 monkeys. Their current habitat is in danger because of rising water levels. If the water levels continue to rise, these monkeys will need to either relocate or adapt to live in the new, aquatic environment. Some adaptations that would help squirrel monkeys live in the water include silky fur so they don’t get weighed down by the water, black and grey coloration similar to other aquatic animals to help them camouflage, and webbed feet to help them swim. Their tail might also go through some changes. It could go from a long tail to help them balance to a flatter, platypus like tail to help them swim.
