Gromphadorhina portentosa, the Malagasy Hissing Cockroach is one of about 4,000 species of cockroaches. They are a unique breed that exclusively inhabit the island of Madagascar. Cockroaches have existed since before the dinosaurs and have adapted over the millennia to survive the ever-changing environment on our planet. I believe they will again successfully adapt to survive the warming planet. Their homes under the decaying matter on the rainforest floor, where they feed and reproduce, may become dryer and less able to sustain these creatures in the future. I think they will have to develop hairier legs and longer antennae as sensors to find food and a higher hiss for attracting mates. They may also gain the ability to fly. Their exoskeletons may grow slightly larger to store more food and they may need a harder outer shell to protect them from predators and the sun’s direct rays.
