The tropical rainforest parrot, called the Scarlet Macaw is a colorful, fun and entertaining species. They have big colorful wings that allow them to swiftly zoom around trees. But today, we are going to talk about their beaks, not the wings. For food, Scarlet Macaws will feast on nuts, fruit and other things. To eat these nuts, or perhaps a hard shell of a fruit, Scarlet Macaws have developed big, black, and hard beaks that are extremely useful for cracking these nuts and attacking their predators. But what if the nut’s become bigger and harder? Over time in populations the parrot would have to develop a rock hard beak and a bigger head with less fur so that it is easier for them to crack the nuts. If they don’t they would break their beaks and heads trying to pry the nut open and they would die.
