The coqui (Eleutherodactylus coqui) The coqui is a small tree frog native to Puerto Rico, known for its distinctive "co-kee" call. It thrives in humid, tropical forests, often found in vegetation near streams or moist areas. Its vibrant green or brown coloration helps it blend into the lush, forested environment. Acknowledging that the coqui resides in moist hábitat, it is an animal that will face distinctive adaptations in order to survive the warm yet flooded environment of a coastal rainforest now turned into a temporary wetland. The coqui will not only change physiologically, with a smaller body to combat heat, longer legs and adapted feet for swimming and more efficient skin permeability in order to retain moisture, it will also change it’s reproductive call, shortening it due to the heat and having a distinctive mating season for more efficient reproduction. Adapted dietary flexibility will ensure that the coqui can thrive.
