The Great Potoo lives in the Amazon rainforest basin. Its habitat is mostly made up of non-flooded forests. It is an owl that has large eyes for seeing in the dark, since it is a nocturnal animal. There are slits on its eyelids for sensing movement even when its eyes are closed. Their feathers are brown, white, gray, and black. They are this color to replicate the pattern of tree bark. Deforestation is a threat to its environment. Since there are so many trees being cut down, there’s a risk that the potoo’s environment will turn into a grassland. Their feathers are made to resemble tree bark so their camouflage will be rendered useless from protecting them from predators in a grassland. Its feathers will most likely turn into an orange-brown hybrid to better match the vegetation of the grasslands. This adaptation will help it to camouflage itself from predators.
