The harpy eagle (Harpia harpyja) is a large neotropical species of eagle. It is also called the American harpy eagle, It is the largest bird of prey throughout its range, and among the largest extant species of eagles in the world. It usually inhabits tropical lowland rainforests in the upper canopy layer. Destruction of its natural habitat has caused it to vanish from many parts of its former range, and it nearly extirpated from much of Central America. The Harpy eagle has a mass of 8.8-11 lbs (Male) and 13–20 lbs (Female), with a size ranging from 36 to 40 inches. Harpy eagles live in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. The predicted time for significant habitat change is ~36 y, Harpy eagles are unlikely to adapt fully at this rate due to their slow reproduction, and conservation efforts are crucial to ensure their survival.
