Capybaras are large rodents with a heavy, barrel-shaped body and relatively short legs, which are shorter in the front than the back. Their fur is typically brown, though it can appear gray, and they have partially webbed feet. These shy animals live in social groups, usually along the banks of lakes and rivers, where they form strong bonds with one another. Capybaras are semi-aquatic and are found in dense vegetation near rivers, lakes, ponds, marshes, and swamps in the Amazon Rainforest. However, if climate change continues at its current pace, the rainforest will become hotter and drier, forcing capybaras to adapt to a savannah environment. To survive, they will likely develop stronger legs for mating and stronger jumping abilities, with adaptations like bunny-like hips, flat feet for the harsher terrain, and lighter fur to cope with the changing climate.
