Tardigrades are incredibly resilient, but over the next 1,000 years, they could develop new traits if their environment changes. They might enhance their ability to repair DNA or even use radiation as a source of energy. As extremophiles, they could evolve thicker outer layers, better heat protection, or partnerships with bacteria to survive in harsher environments. Their dormancy capabilities might improve, allowing quicker revival or longer periods of metabolic suspension.
Tardigrades may also evolve more sophisticated sensory systems to navigate and find resources in scarce environments. In space, they might adapt to use magnetic fields for navigation, shield against cosmic rays, or feed on space particles. They could potentially gain energy from radiation or through symbiosis with photosynthetic organisms. Their ability to incorporate foreign genes might improve, helping them adapt more rapidly. However, if conditions remain stable, tardigrades may not change significantly, as they’re already exceptionally well-adapted.
