Capuchin Monkeys live in tropical rainforests from South America to Central America. Due to rising water levels caused by climate change, tropical rainforests may transform into marshes over time. If this happens, monkeys would evolve. Their diet changes from fruits and small animals to small fish, snails, and shrimp. Capuchins would need to adapt to catch these foods. They would have clawed hands for this reason and to defend themselves from predators. To get food from water, the monkey would have to swim. They would have nictitating membranes to see underwater and webbed extremities to swim better. The monkey wouldn’t live completely underwater, however, it’d still live in trees. The monkeys will be completely brown to camouflage with these trees, so its prey and predators cannot see them. The new monkey is called the “simiaqua,” (si-mee-AH-qua) a combination of “monkey” and “water” in latin.
