Orangutans currently inhabit the rainforests of Southeast Asia, particularly in Borneo and Sumatra, where they live in the high canopy of dense trees. The lush environment provides them with abundant fruit, leaves, and shelter from predators. Their strong arms and large hands help them swing between trees, and they build sturdy nests to sleep in at night. However, deforestation and climate change are threatening their habitat, leading to less food and fewer places to nest.
In the future, as their environment changes due to rising temperatures and shifting rainfall patterns, orangutans will need to adapt. With a thinning canopy and fewer fruit-bearing trees, they may develop stronger, more agile limbs for better movement on the ground. Their diet may change as they rely more on bark, insects, or small animals for food. Additionally, they could evolve thicker fur or improve water storage abilities to survive in hotter, drier conditions.
