Currently, three-toed sloths have coarse brown fur for camouflage in the forest environment. They have 3 long claws on all 4 limbs primarily for climbing and hanging from branches. Sloths move extremely slowly (about 0.17mph) and have a slow metabolism, so they don’t need much food. In the future, the three-toed sloth’s current habitat in Central and South America will turn into a savannah. So, sloths will evolve to have shorter golden-brown fur for better camouflage. With fewer trees in the environment, sloths’ claws will become shorter and sharper for defense from predators. Sloths will walk on fours to find food. In addition, they will travel faster and run at up to 25mph when threatened. Sloths’ diet will change from leaves and fruit to savannah grasses. Sloths will also be nocturnal because they are completely blind in bright light, and their hearing and sense of smell will improve.
